Clarinda was founded in 1851. It is named in honor of Clarinda Buck, a woman who, according to local legend, carried water to the first surveyors of Page County. Much of the city's development followed closely on the construction of the Clarinda Treatment Complex, a major hospital facility that was first erected in 1884. It was only the third hospital focused on mental health to be built in all of Iowa. Average high temperatures in Clarinda reach 87 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average low temperatures dip to 10 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 3.02 inches. Annual snowfall averages 29 inches.

Clarinda is the home of the Clarinda A's, an amateur baseball team. The organization has sent several players on to play in the major leagues, notably St. Louis Cardinals star and hall-of-famer Ozzie Smith. Smith regularly returns to Clarinda for special events.
